Consider Haiti was started over 15 years ago with primary care clinics, medicines, vitamins and water filters. We followed up with sustainable nutrition. In 2010 this follow-up came in the form of 17 does and a buck. Now, we have 750 goats across several villages! We've established a better seeds program for our gardens as well as a system for storing crops to sell when market prices are best. Someday we hope to be totally self-sufficient: growing, selling and eating only local Haitian produce, drinking clean water and building strong communities. But. we still need help for seeds and goats, water filters, medicine, and stipends for our Haitian Community Health Agents.

On April 15, 1965, Fr. Barbieri founded COOPI. This is where a 50-year journey begins, during which COOPI and Italian international cooperation with all the many voices will grow and become together. But the history of COOPI begins before 1965, as early as 1961 when the young Jesuit Vincenzo Barbieri was sent by his superiors to study in Lyons at the Faculty of Theology, in view of a future departure for Chad as a missionary. In France, he meets a much more lively and open cultural environment than the one that permeated the Italian province in the years preceding the Second Vatican Council and comes into contact with international lay movements engaged for years in voluntary work in developing countries. In 1962 Barbieri refused to leave as a missionary and returned to Milan with the intention of training volunteers ready to leave for the south of the world. It is he who introduces the lay component into the missions.

Friends of the Children of Haiti (FOTCOH) provides life-saving support to over 15,000 Haitians patients at the FOTCOH medical clinic in Jacmel, Haiti. Every year, hundreds of volunteers travel to the FOTCOH clinic to provide medical care to Haitians in need.
Richard and Barbara Hammond starting traveling to Haiti in the 70’s on medical mission to providing life-saving support to the Haitian people. In 2000, the FOTCOH clinic was completed in Cyvadier, Haiti. 6 times a year, volunteer medical teams travel to the clinic to treat patients, and in between, mini clinics are run by a Haitian doctor so patients can continue to receive the care and medication they need. The clinic sees upwards of 15,000 Haitian patients each year.
Friends of the Children of Haiti works to:
– Bring doctors, nurses, EMTs, pharmacists and other medical professionals to work at our clinic to triage injuries, treat illness, offer prenatal care and perform major surgery
– Fighting hunger with our Medika Mamba nutrition program.
– Creating economic opportunity by training and employing a Haitian staff at our clinic

The humanitarian aid programs established by GSF and our mission are very closely aligned - all serve the same purpose of community development. Each element of our work feeds into and from each other element - whether it’s childhood nutrition, primary education, further education grants, agricultural extension, marketable skills, small business loans, women’s services or transportation.
For instance our sailing boat, Fu Fei, is part of the microcredit small business loans, serves to transport the food supplies for the school, plus building materials, provides 4 jobs, reduces the cost of running the school, and saves fuel!
The school meals feed the children and vulnerable people in the village, assisted by the egg and vegetable programs from the agriculture service. Better nutrition then improves children’s school results. This impacts the health of the whole village. The teachers’ salaries return directly into the community, as do the microloan repayments enabling over 300 small businesses to date. Scholarships help teenagers finish grade school and attend trade schools or universities, bringing skilled workers and teachers back to the community when qualified.

Haiti Health Initiative (HHI) is a nonprofit organization focused on serving the public health needs of the rural Haitian people. HHI’s goal is to first uncover the root causes that contribute to reduced health in Haiti. HHI will then use that knowledge to work alongside the Haitian community and to implement sustainable water treatment projects, improve nutritional opportunities through agricultural expansion, and train local medical and dental providers to provide sustainable care for those in their communities. HHI’s philosophy in working with the Haitians is best summarized by Gordon B.
