Founded in 1979 by a group of French intellectuals in response to the emergency in Afghanistan. These included Françoise Giroud, Bernard Henri Lévy, Marek Halter, Alfred Kastler (a Nobel Laureate in physics), Guy Sorman, Jacques Attali, and several other doctors, journalists and writers. While the fight against hunger had previously been an element of more general humanitarian action (the fight against poverty, promoting better health, etc.) they founded an organisation that was exclusively dedicated to ending hunger. Action against Hunger is now recognised as one of the leading organisations in the fight against hunger worldwide.

Our mission is to save lives and meet the basic needs of people in the hardest-to-reach areas. ACTED develops and implements programs for the most vulnerable populations who are victims of violence, conflict, natural disasters or endemic poverty. ACTED’s approach goes beyond the emergency response, with a commitment to sustainable development and livelihoods of communities.
ACTED’s mission is to support vulnerable populations around the world and support them in building a better future by providing a response tailored to specific needs. Our teams help people affected by crises through a global and local approach, multidisciplinary and adapted to each context. By acting as a link between Emergency, Rehabilitation and Development, ACTED’s teams ensure that interventions in times of crisis are useful and sustainable, as only long-term support – staying on site after the emergency and involving communities – helps break the cycle of poverty and support people on the road to sustainable development.
Créée en 1979, Aide Médicale Internationale (A.M.I.) est une organisation humanitaire non gouvernementale à but non lucratif, apolitique et laïque.

AidWEST was founded during the first few days following the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. In catastrophes such as this, not only are thousands killed but many more are severely injured, orphaned, separated and traumatized. In the early weeks following such disasters, large organizations slowly gear up to send medicines, doctors and nurses. But in Haiti, and in other recent disasters in impoverished places, the staggering numbers of casualties far exceeded the capabilities of the initial influx of professionals. Doctors and nurses are simply overwhelmed by the needs tens of thousands of patients have for labor-intensive procedures.
