Haiti Outreach Ministries’ beginning can be traced back to a chance meeting between two students at Cincinnati Christian University in the mid-1980’s, Leon Dorleans from Haiti and Walker Gaulding from Virginia. A God-incidence between these two young men led to a friendship, which in turn led to another God-incidence that began the ministry you see today.
After college, both of these graduates went their separate ways. Walker returned to a church in Warsaw, Virginia, and Leon returned to Haiti where he started a church in Cité Soleil, the poorest community in the Western Hemisphere. The worshippers of this church were meeting in a narrow street under tarps, a street where raw sewage ran in a ditch directly alongside. Leon’s congregation numbered about 120 at this time, and they had been able to secure some land, but had no means to erect a building on the property.
About the same time, Walker’s home church, Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia, contacted him to see if he had suggestions about potential mission trips. Walker immediately thought of Leon and had the church contact him.
In August of 1989, the very first team went to Cité Soleil. Twenty-one members from Fairmount, along with Walker, built a crude “pole-barn” type structure with a tin roof that became the church building. Walker was honored to preach to these people who were hungry for the Word.

Harvest of Haiti Inc. is a Minnesota-based international non-profit interdenominational religious ministry. Though it uses some funds for communication in the USA, more than 90% of donated funds are transferred directly to Bishop Stenio Capre’s First Interdenominational Evangelical Church in Haiti for distribution to the programs outlined in this “About” section.

The ministry is dedicated to spreading the love of Jesus by providing food, shelter, clothing, and both Christian and secular education to the children of Haiti. The circumstances that led Tom Northen, the founder of International Missionary Fellowship, to start in 1972 what would become Hospital Evangelique in Bombardopolis were directed by Providence. Today we serve a population of about 50,000 in a remote area of Northwest Haiti. Haiti is notoriously poor and unsettled. Challenges in Bombardopolis include practical as well as spiritual. We endeavor to show the love of God as we meet basic needs for these folks in Jesus' name. For forty years we have been the only consistent source of healthcare in the area.

Joy in Haiti Is a 501(c)3 Charitable organization that supports several ministries in the impoverished nation of Haiti.
Our Story
In 2009 a small team of volunteers, led by Cindy Keagy and Leslie Holdegraver, followed Pastor Jean Prenor Brisenault on a vision to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the local community, growing a church and starting a small school connected to the church.
This was the beginning of the 501(c)3 organization JOY IN HAITI. In late 2011, it was clear to Pastor Brisenault that opening a safe home for young girls had been laid on his heart, and his wife Joseline was in agreement. They opened an orphanage, giving it the name "House of Joy" in the hopes it would be a place of joy for young girls in need to live. A board of 10 members oversees the functioning of this growing organization in its support of House of Joy, New Christian Church of Tabarre, and the associated Christian School of Tabarre. The mission of Joy in Haiti is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in Haiti, as well as to help meet the physical needs of those living in poverty. Joy in Haiti works with followers of Jesus who live in Haiti and are sharing their faith with those around them.

It all began in a small town called Pignon, Haiti, located 90 miles north of Port-au-Prince. In 1982, a Haitian couple, Pastor Francois Romelus and his wife, Madam, felt called to start a church. Already parents to four biological kids and busy pastoring a church, Francois and Madam began taking in orphans to live with them. The orphans grew in number and eventually an entirely separate house had to be built for all the kids to sleep in. With all those kids came the development of a school and of a sewing center. Since 1982 Francois and Madam have started a church, orphanage, sewing center and a school, all located on the same 2-acre property.
