Primary Care Haiti is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to saving lives by changing the healthcare paradigm in Haiti. We focus on primary and emergency care, supported by community education. We raise and distribute funds to make it possible for Haitian healthcare professionals to be trained in preventative and emergency care, and provide Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Primary Care Haiti distributes donated medical equipment and educates Haitian doctors and nurses working in rural towns. We concentrate on preventative medicine, specifically, physical exam skills, cervical cancer screening, and the management of chronic diseases like high blood pressure. We also teach the rapid-response skills needed for Haitian healthcare professionals to be ready for any emergency.
Cervical cancer – the number one cause of cancer in women in Haiti – is one of the reasons we focus on preventative primary care. This year, Primary Care Haiti partnered with MobileODT – an Israeli company whose innovative mobile colposcope has revolutionized cervical cancer screening – to perform hundreds of cervical cancer screenings in Haiti. We found many asymptomatic women with abnormal cervical cells which would have surely progressed to become life-threatening had we not conducted this simple, yet life-saving, screening exam. Our goal is to purchase more colposcopes and expand the use of this technology throughout rural Haiti so all women have access to cervical cancer screening and rapid treatment.
