The humanitarian aid programs established by GSF and our mission are very closely aligned - all serve the same purpose of community development. Each element of our work feeds into and from each other element - whether it’s childhood nutrition, primary education, further education grants, agricultural extension, marketable skills, small business loans, women’s services or transportation.
For instance our sailing boat, Fu Fei, is part of the microcredit small business loans, serves to transport the food supplies for the school, plus building materials, provides 4 jobs, reduces the cost of running the school, and saves fuel!
The school meals feed the children and vulnerable people in the village, assisted by the egg and vegetable programs from the agriculture service. Better nutrition then improves children’s school results. This impacts the health of the whole village. The teachers’ salaries return directly into the community, as do the microloan repayments enabling over 300 small businesses to date. Scholarships help teenagers finish grade school and attend trade schools or universities, bringing skilled workers and teachers back to the community when qualified.

Since its inception in March 2004, the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund has given concrete aid to Haiti’s democratic movement as they attempted to survive the brutal coup against their democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and to rebuild shattered development projects. We urge you to contribute generously, not only for this immediate crisis, but in order to support the long-run development of human rights, sustainable agriculture and economic justice in Haiti.
All donations to the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund will be forwarded to our partners on the ground to help them rebuild what has been destroyed.

Haiti Marycare (HM,Inc) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in the early 1990s by Tom and Mary Lou Larkin, Rev. Joseph Dorcin and Sherman Malone. Sherman, a social worker with experience in Haiti first invited Mary Lou to accompany her on a humanitarian visit to Jacquesyl, in the northeast corridor of the island.
Mary Lou was appalled to discover that women in Haiti were delivering babies at home on dirt floors and machetes were being used to cut umbilical cords. As a result, there was a high rate of infant mortality and maternal deaths related to infections from childbirth.
That moment inspired Mary Lou to make a difference. She returned to Connecticut, consulted with medical colleagues and devised simple, hygienic birthing kits in Ziplock bags to help pregnant women in Haiti. These kits consisted of a new razor blade, a piece of string to tie off the umbilical cord, a bar of soap, a cotton receiving blanket, alcohol swabs and a pair of gloves. Since the delivery of these kits to Jacquesyl, starting in 1999, there have been no deaths related to childbirth. Over the years, the kits have developed and now include an eco-friendly, Haitian-made re-reusable diaper.
Today, HMI supports healthcare, community and education in the towns of Jacquesyl, a small fishing community, and Pilette in the foothills of the mountains. Neither communities had access to healthcare or education before Haiti Marycare was founded in 2001.

The Vassar Haiti Project was created after 9/11 when Andrew and Lila Meade decided that it was time to do something positive for our world. Why Haiti? Andrew Meade lived in Haiti as a teen where his father worked for the Foreign Service at the US Embassy and coincidentally, Lila Metres Meade had her own roots in Haiti, where her Mother lived as a young child in Port-au-Prince in the 1920’s. Haiti runs deep in the hearts of Andrew and Lila.
