Founded in 1979 by a group of French intellectuals in response to the emergency in Afghanistan. These included Françoise Giroud, Bernard Henri Lévy, Marek Halter, Alfred Kastler (a Nobel Laureate in physics), Guy Sorman, Jacques Attali, and several other doctors, journalists and writers. While the fight against hunger had previously been an element of more general humanitarian action (the fight against poverty, promoting better health, etc.) they founded an organisation that was exclusively dedicated to ending hunger. Action against Hunger is now recognised as one of the leading organisations in the fight against hunger worldwide.

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organisations in Germany, independent of politics and religion. It was established in 1962, as the German section of the "Freedom from Hunger Campaign", one of the world's first initiatives aimed at the eradication of hunger.
What we do
We fight for the eradication of hunger and poverty. Our aim is to render our work unnecessary. We provide aid from a single source: From rapid disaster relief to long-term development cooperation projects. In 2015, we were able to support 7.3 million people with 387 overseas projects in 40 countries. Since its establishment, Welthungerhilfe has supported more than 8,120 overseas projects with around 3.03 billion Euro, 5,746 of which have been self-help projects (more facts and figures in the latest annual report).
How we work
Help to self-help is our guiding principle; together with local partner organisations we strengthen structures on a grassroots level and ensure a long-term success of our projects. Moreover, we inform the public and advise politics – nationally and internationally. We thus fight for change of the circumstances that lead to hunger and poverty.
Church World Service was born in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II. Seventeen denominations came together to form an agency "to do in partnership what none of us could hope to do as well alone." The mission: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.
More than 70 years later the mission remains, though where and how we accomplish it has changed dramatically.
In 1946-47, U.S. churches opened their hearts and provided more than 11 million pounds of food, clothing, and medical supplies to war-torn Europe and Asia. Protestants and Catholics pooled talent and resources to meet a staggering refugee crisis. Today the Immigration and Refugee Program of CWS is a vital, internationally-recognized operation, having resettled nearly half a million refugees since its inception.
