SUMMARY: Greater Good Haiti's mission is to provide schools for basic primary education, as well as environmental sustainability education through school programs, public forums and community based projects in under-served communities.
Greater Good Haiti (GGH), called Pi Gwo Byen in Creole, is a 501(c)3 organization committed to remedial education for illiterate children on the island of La Gonave, Haiti. The organization was launched by Palo Alto native, Kelly Kobza, a schoolteacher who traveled to Haiti in the winter of 2010 to assist with the post-earthquake relief efforts. While in Haiti, she saw first-hand the crushing poverty and the high illiteracy rate, and founded Greater Good Haiti (GGH) to bring a much needed resource to the people of Haiti.
Greater Good Haiti's main goal is to provide remedial education for children who have otherwise no means of attending school, enabling them to better their lives and the lives of their families. GGH reinforces these efforts with a feeding program and health, wellness and environmental education to the students and surrounding community. Over the past 4 years, GGH's pilot program on the island of Anse A Galets has launched a literacy school, a reforestation project, a community center, and a feeding program for the students. The school has achieved great success, with a pass-rate significantly higher than surrounding public schools, and GGH accomplishes this in half the time. GGH school curriculum aligns with the Haitian National school standards, so children may then continue to higher levels of literacy and education.
